In May 2022, Cheryl Wambugu joined African Digital Heritage as a Communications Intern. Below she shares more about her work and a few reflections on culture and technology.
Hello! My name is Cheryl Wambugu, I am a Communications Intern at African Digital Heritage. I am also a Communications Student at Strathmore University. At African Digital Heritage, I assist with content creation and dissemination to help boost the organization’s digital footprint and reach.
I got to know about ADH through Strathmore University and was fascinated by its roles and goals; to preserve African culture and heritage through digitization. I found this very intriguing. I was curious to know what innovations and interventions they use to protect, preserve and promote African cultural heritage, and how my interests in development communications and public relations would contribute to this.
In the short period of time I have worked at here, I have noted that African heritage is increasingly at risk because of modernization, with most histories and cultural practices being undocumented or poorly documented. It is fascinating to see how cultural heritage practitioners are using technology to solve this, and the interest this is getting from audiences.
