DIGITISING HERITAGE IN AN ERA OF CHANGE

LA NUMÉRISATION DU PATRIMOINE À L’ÈRE DU CHANGEMENT (DIGITISING HERITAGE IN AN ERA OF CHANGE)

The digitisation of heritage safeguards the treasures of humanity beyond their physical presence. The introduction of digital technology into creative techniques and mediation strategies enriches the public experience and opens up infinite possibilities for visual artists and museum professionals. It fosters links between creativity and innovation, between art, heritage, science and technology.

As we enter a pivotal period, rich in boundless opportunities, but also in dangers and uncertainties, it is crucial to examine the potential of digital technology for African heritage. But it is just as important to open up alternatives to artificial intelligence by giving a voice to other representations of the world.

This is the aim of this meeting, which will examine the issues and challenges of digital technology for museums on the African continent.

Dakar, Senegal, 12 – 14th November 2024, Musée Théodore Monod.

Our Founder/Director Chao Tayiana Maina who is also a Member of the Scientific Committee for the digitalisation of the Théodore Monod Museum- NUMERICOL will lead a talk on:

Theme: Beyond Preservation: Transforming African Heritage Digitisation through Metadata

In the past decade, the digitisation of cultural heritage collections has surged globally, driven by the need for improved accessibility, enhanced preservation, and innovative cultural engagement. For African museums and cultural institutions, however, digitisation holds unique, transformative possibilities. Beyond preserving history, it offers an opportunity to address and challenge the colonial legacies embedded in heritage management worldwide.

This session delves into critical questions surrounding the digitisation of African heritage: Why prioritise African collections now? How will digitisation impact contemporary cultural landscapes and shape future identities? And in what ways does digital access intersect with evolving African identities and community experiences?
